modbot is a desktop app that installs and manages Minecraft mods, shaders, and resource packs from plain-language requests. It is operated by Brobot Technologies Limited ("we", "us", "our"), a private company limited by shares registered in England and Wales. This policy explains what data we collect when you use the app, why we collect it, and what we do with it. It covers the modbot app and this website. If anything here is unclear, email privacy@modbot.gg.
the short version
We collect as little as we can. We do not upload your game files, worlds, or saves. To turn your request into a list of mods, we send the text you type to a third-party AI provider (DeepSeek) along with minimal technical context. If you choose to attach a screenshot, we send that image to a second AI provider (Anthropic) to describe its visual style, and we also briefly process it on our own EU-based servers to recognise which shader pack it shows; we keep only the resulting text, not the image itself. Payments go through Stripe, and we never see your full card number. We collect basic usage and crash data to keep the app working and stop abuse. We do not sell your data. The rest of this page fills in the detail.
what we collect
account email — when you subscribe, Stripe collects your email address at checkout and shares it with us. We use it to identify your paid account and to contact you about your subscription. We do not send marketing email unless you opt in.
device identifier — on first run the app generates an anonymous identifier locally on your computer. We use it to run the free allowance and to apply rate limits. It is not tied to your name and does not by itself identify you.
request text — the plain-language text you type when asking for mods, plus minimal technical context such as your Minecraft version and mod loader. We process this to work out which mods to install. Please do not include personal or sensitive information in your requests.
attached screenshots — you can optionally attach a screenshot or image to a request ("make it look like this"). The image is processed as described in the "ai processing of screenshots (anthropic)" and "shader identification (our servers)" sections below and is not stored on our servers; a reduced-size copy stays on your computer as part of your local chat history, and only the AI-generated text description of the image's style becomes part of your stored conversation. Attaching an image is always optional. Please do not attach images containing personal or sensitive information.
payment and subscription data — Stripe handles your payment and shares limited billing information with us, such as your subscription status, plan, billing country, and whether a charge succeeded. We never see or store your full card number.
usage and diagnostic data — the number of AI requests you make, crash and error reports, your app and operating system version, session length and time spent in the app, and standard startup diagnostics. We use this to keep the app working and to prevent abuse.
local game files — the app reads your local Minecraft folder to install mods, shaders, resource packs, and the mod loader. This happens entirely on your computer. Your game files, worlds, and saves are processed locally and are not uploaded to us.
stored conversations — we store the conversations you have with modbot, meaning the requests you type and the responses the app gives, in our database. We use them to provide the service, to debug problems, and to improve how accurately we interpret requests. The request text in these conversations is also sent to DeepSeek, as described below; please do not include personal or sensitive information in your requests.
stored feedback — when you submit feedback, we store it in our database, along with any email address or identifier you choose to attach to it. We use it to respond to you and to improve modbot.
how we use your information
We use your information to provide and run the app: to interpret your requests, download and install the right files, manage your free allowance and subscription, and identify your account. We use usage and diagnostic data to fix bugs, improve performance, enforce rate limits, and prevent abuse. We use your email to contact you about your subscription and, where the law requires it, to keep accounting records. We store the conversations you have with modbot and any feedback you submit so we can provide and debug the service, improve how accurately we interpret requests, and respond to your feedback. We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell it.
ai processing (deepseek)
When you type a request, we send the text you enter — plus minimal technical context such as your Minecraft version and mod loader — to DeepSeek, a third-party AI provider based in the People's Republic of China, which interprets it into a list of mods. DeepSeek processes this data on its own servers located in China. We do not send your email address, payment details, or game files to DeepSeek. China does not currently have a UK data adequacy decision, which means it is not recognised as providing an equivalent level of data protection to the UK. We transfer your request text to DeepSeek because it is necessary to provide the core function of the service you have asked us to perform. We limit the data sent to the minimum needed for this purpose. Please do not include personal or sensitive information in your requests.
ai processing of screenshots (anthropic)
If you attach a screenshot or image to a request, we send that image to Anthropic, a third-party AI provider based in the United States, which generates a short text description of its visual style so the app can find matching shaders, resource packs, and mods. When the app then visually compares candidate packs against your image, it may include publicly available preview images from Modrinth in that processing. Anthropic processes this data on its own servers. We do not store your image on our servers — only the text description becomes part of your stored conversation — and we do not send your email address, payment details, or game files to Anthropic. For transfers to the United States we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses where required by law. Attaching an image is optional; the rest of the service works without it. Please do not attach images containing personal or sensitive information.
shader identification (our servers)
If you attach a screenshot, we also briefly process the image on our own servers, hosted in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany), to recognise which shader pack it most resembles by comparing it against publicly available preview images from Modrinth. This processing happens in memory and completes in under a second; the image is not stored on our servers, and only the resulting shader suggestions become part of your conversation. Our servers for this feature run on Render, a hosting provider, under our instructions. Attaching an image is optional; the rest of the service works without it.
payments (stripe)
Payments are handled by Stripe, a third-party payment processor. When you subscribe, you enter your card details directly with Stripe, and Stripe holds that card data. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe shares limited billing information with us so we can manage your account. Stripe processes your data under its own privacy policy. Details of how billing works, including cancellation, are in our terms and refund and cancellation policy.
mod downloads (modrinth)
Mod files, shaders, and resource packs are downloaded from the Modrinth API. When the app fetches a file on your behalf, standard internet traffic reaches Modrinth, including technical information such as your IP address that any download involves. Modrinth handles that data under its own policy. We do not send Modrinth your email, payment details, or game files.
analytics and telemetry
We use two tools, both hosted in the European Union and acting only on our instructions: PostHog for usage analytics and Sentry for crash reports. In the app, events are tied to the anonymous device identifier described above — never to your name or email — and cover things like the app being opened, an install succeeding or failing, and the upgrade screen being shown. You can turn all of this off at any time in the app's Settings under "Usage & crash reports".
This website uses a cookieless analytics setup: it sets no cookies and does not track you across other sites. We record page views and interactions with the pricing section so we can understand what works. If you arrive from the app, the same anonymous device identifier links your visit to your app activity so we can see the journey end to end — still without knowing who you are.
legal bases
Under UK and EU GDPR we rely on the following legal bases. We rely on contract to provide the app and manage your subscription. We rely on our legitimate interests to keep the app secure, prevent abuse, and improve it, balanced against your rights. We rely on consent where it applies, such as optional marketing email, which you can withdraw at any time. We rely on legal obligation to keep records the law requires us to keep, such as for tax and accounting.
who we share data with
We share data only with the providers we need to run the service: DeepSeek to interpret your requests, Anthropic to analyse screenshots you choose to attach, Render to host our EU-based shader-identification servers, Stripe to take payments, Modrinth to download mod files, PostHog for usage analytics, and Sentry for crash reports. Each acts under its own policy or on our instructions. We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our users, or the safety of others. We do not sell your personal data.
international transfers
We are based in the UK and our users are worldwide. Some of our service providers process data outside the UK and EEA. In particular, DeepSeek is based in and processes data in the People's Republic of China, which does not currently have a UK or EU data adequacy decision. Anthropic is based in and processes data in the United States. For other providers (such as Anthropic, Stripe, PostHog, and Sentry), we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions where required by law. For DeepSeek, the transfer of your request text is necessary to provide the core function of the service, and we limit the data transferred to the minimum required for that purpose. how long we keep data
We keep your account email and subscription records for as long as your account is active, and afterwards for a period of six years. This is to ensure that we can deal with any issues relating to our contract with you. We keep device identifiers, usage data, and crash reports for a limited period and then delete or aggregate them. We retain the conversations you have with modbot, including the request text and any AI-generated descriptions of screenshots you attached, for up to 90 days to provide the service and to debug problems, after which we delete them or keep only an anonymised or aggregated version. The screenshots themselves are never stored on our servers. We keep feedback you submit, and any contact details you attach to it, for as long as your account is active.
your rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data: to access it, correct it, erase it, restrict or object to how we use it, ask for a portable copy, and withdraw consent where we rely on it. To exercise any of these, email privacy@modbot.gg. If you are in the UK and think we have handled your data wrongly, you can complain to us by emailing privacy@modbot.gg. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. If you are in the EU, you can complain to your local supervisory authority.
age requirements
You must be at least 13 to use modbot. It is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you are between 13 and 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian to use the app and to pay for a subscription. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, email privacy@modbot.gg and we will delete it.
security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, and we rely on established providers like Stripe for sensitive operations such as payments. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to keep the data we hold safe and limited to what we actually need.
changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "last updated" date at the top of this page. If we make a significant change, such as adding new tracking, we will update this page before the change takes effect. Please check back occasionally.
